Sport Interview – Spr Hartley (21 Engr Regt)

What inspired you to start the sport?

I started sailing when I was 7. My dad is a keen sailor, so that made the sport very accessible for me and I have sailed continuously since learning.

Where has this sport taken you within the Military?

The sport has provided me with many opportunities since joining the Royal Engineers from leading AT expeditions to racing at national level against Olympic medallists. This year I am representing the corps at the 2000 millennium series, as well as the army at various events including the interservices team racing championships and the 2000 class nationals. During these events I’ll be sailing with my crew, Merry, onboard a brand new dinghy that was provided by the Royal Engineers Yacht Club.

What advice would you give someone interested in starting out?

Don’t be put off by the stereotype of sailing being expensive and elitist. At most clubs this isn’t the case and they will welcome new sailors in, train and encourage participation in events. When you get to the level of buying your own boat, the second hand market is full of bargains with high performance boats readily available for less than £1000. Also with the proper kit, the cold is rarely an issue and it’s feasible to sail all year round at most clubs.
