Sport Interview – Cpl Ricky Reeves (1RSME)

What inspired you to start the sport?

At the age of 7 all my friends were playing at the local club ,Worthing. I was invited to attend an open day. I absolutely loved it and never looked back.

I had a 6 year break from rugby when I moved to America but as soon as I arrived home I went straight down to the rugby club and picked up where I left off.

Where has this sport taken you within the Military?

I have been lucky enough to travel the world. I have been to Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, USA, Hong Kong and South Africa with the Army team.

My favourite probably being the Australia and New Zealand trip. The Army rugby team went out for 6 weeks to take part in the first ever Defence World Cup which ran alongside the Rugby World Cup. We played against 8 other countries finally meeting the Australian Army in the final which took place in New Zealand and we brought home the trophy. It was such an awesome experience.  We ended up being mistaken for the Welsh rugby team and celebrated for free all night in Auckland!

What advice would you give someone interested in starting out?

Just do it! whether that be Regimental Rugby, Corp’s Rugby, Army Rugby or just down at your local club. It will be the best decision you ever make. Its such a positive, fun, inclusive and rewarding environment to be involved in and also has  many transferable skills that you can take with you into a military working environment. Rugby has given me so much in my Army career. From travelling the world to playing in front of 80,000 people at Twickenham. It also enabled me to pick up a professional contract, which the Army fully supported all the way through.
